Focal Point
The Portuguese Focal Point is located within the Institute for Drug and Drug Addiction (IDT,I.P.). The FP tasks are carried out by the international relations Unit (NRI).
Within the EU, National Focal Points were created as parts/elements of the REITOX network (European Information Network on Drugs and Drug Addiction) in the early 1990s.
National Focal Point
Governmental agency, nominated by the Government to act as regular point of contact on the exchange of information required by Article 2 of the Council Regulation;
Responsible for setting up and managing the national information system;
Has authority to request and analyse information from other governmental information sources.
The National Focal Points are the main information interfaces between the Member States (MS) and the EMCDDA.
Under MS responsibility, they provide the EMCDDA with all information requested within the framework of the Centre’s work programmes (WPs) and satisfy ad hoc requests from policy‑makers and other key partners of the EMCDDA.
The EMCDDA uses five key epidemiological indicators to achieve its goal of providing factual, objective, reliable and comparable information on drugs and drug addiction at European level. These indicators have been developed by the Centre in close collaboration with the Reitox network, experts across Europe and with other international organisations competent in the field of drugs and drug addiction.
The five key epidemiological indicators underpin the EMCDDA's reporting on trends and developments in the EU drug situation. They are also a necessary component of any analysis of the coverage of responses or the assessment of the impact of policies and actions.
NFPs are, together with the EMCDDA, responsible for a broad dissemination at national level of the EMCDDA and REITOX work results.
At national level, each NFP is the leading body that works closely together with all relevant partners that collect, produce and/or analyse data in the drugs field. NFPs work closely together with scientists, policy-makers and specialists working in this field. They closely follow and analyse the scientific, legal and policy developments in their countries.
