Reintegration is considered to be part of the complete rehabilitation and treatment process. This intervention considers the whole process of rehabilitation, which begins with the individual's request for aid, and persists until the individual as reacquired autonomy and stability and is integrated as citizen with full rights in the society.

Responses to social consequences of drug abuse in Portugal are mainly promoted by social reintegration programmes mplemented by the IDT, the Employment and Training Institute (IEFP), the Social Security Institute and by Non Governmental Organizations, who play an important role in the search of solutions for the problems of their community.

The main priorities established by the National Plan for  2005-2012 period in the area of reintegration are:

  • To ensure comprehensiveness and coordination of the rehabilitation resources in all aspects of the individual´s life, in order to develop responsible life projects;
  • To promote reintegration as a global process, involving all stakeholders in integrated responses, through an effective and participated management;
  • To develop a quality process of reintegration intervention.
